in funding

Great Basin Corp., a Utah firm that is developing an easy-to-use molecular diagnostic test, received $9.5 million in new capital provided by previous investors. It will be used to expand manufacturing and research. Great Basin received FDA clearance in May to market its first product, a test for a deadly hospital-acquired infection.

Usana Health Sciences, the Utah multilevel marketing company, earned more than 85 national and international accolades in 2012 for its products and strategic partnerships with athletes, scientific experts and research institutions. That was double the number in 2011.

Apple reports

40 billion apps

downloaded

Apple says users have downloaded more than 40 billion apps for the iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch, nearly half of them in 2012. In December more than 2 billion apps were downloaded, Apple said, noting there are 775,000 individual applications available in its app store.

China in talks

Daimler stake

China's sovereign wealth fund is in talks about possibly buying a stake in German luxury automaker Daimler. The People's Daily, the main Communist Party newspaper, said China Investment might buy 4 percent to 10 percent of Daimler, which sold its stake in Chrysler in 2007.
