Jan. 18 is the deadline for applicants to apply for a variety of federal agricultural grants.
Utah agricultural landowners and operators are encouraged to submit applications to Natural Resources Conservation Service to be eligible for national initiatives. Among them are programs to improve protection of the sage grouse and its habitat, and an effort to encourage the use of high tunnels or hoop houses to prolong the growing season and protect crops.
Funding for the initiatives comes through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program.
Utah farmers also are eligible for the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program, which also focuses on recovery of sage grouse habitat, as well as that for the southwestern willow flycatcher and black-footed ferret.
The Agricultural Management Assistance program also provides assistance in establishing high tunnels.
