Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp. has reported lower sales and a smaller loss for the third quarter of its 2012 fiscal year.

The Salt Lake City-based company said sales for its recently completed third quarter were $5.4 million compared with sales of $6.9 million for the same quarter in 2011.

For the quarter, Evans & Sutherland posted a loss of $1.1 million, or 10 cents per share, compared with a loss of $1.3 million, or 12 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.

"The low 2012 sales were attributable to lower than expected new sales bookings. Customer bookings improved slightly in the third quarter but were still less than expected," David H. Bateman, president and CEO, said in a statement announcing the company's latest financial results.

Evans & Sutherland had an order backlog of $15.6 million, on Sept. 28, 2012, compared with a backlog of $17.4 million as of Dec. 31, 2011.

"While the sales backlog is low compared to recent history, sales prospects remain strong and low bookings appear attributable to the timing of customer decisions rather than lost opportunities," Bateman said.

Evans & Sutherland computer graphics company provides systems and software primarily to planetariums and digital cinemas.
