A 16-member delegation from the China Great Wall Society, 11 of whom are nationally known artists in that country, were in Utah on Thursday for the signing of a "memorandum of understanding" with the Division of Utah State Parks and Recreation.
Prior to the signing ceremony that took place in the early afternoon, the artists from the China Great Wall Academy of Painting and Calligraphy spent time on Antelope Island, sketching and painting.
The pact is part of an international exchange program that will create a sister relationship between the division, Antelope Island State Park and the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall.
Under that agreement, the state will encourage Utahns to visit the Great Wall while the China Great Wall Society will promote Utah and Antelope Island as destinations for Chinese travelers.
"It will be a mutually beneficial relationship," said Tracie Cayford, deputy director of the Utah Office of Tourism.
To celebrate the sister relationship, the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, the Utah Office of Tourism and the China Great Wall Society are hosting a Chinese art exhibition Friday. It will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, 15 E. South Temple, in downtown Salt Lake City.
