The Dugout Canyon coal mine in Carbon County has won a "Sentinels of Safety" award for having one of the nation's top safety records in 2011 for large underground coal mines.

The mine, which is operated by Arch Coal, Inc. subsidiary Canyon Fuel Co., recorded almost 450,000 hours of work time without a lost-time incident. Its zero rate for injuries was much better than the national average of 2.44 incidents per 200,000 employee hours worked.

Dugout Canyon has not had a reportable safety incident since May of 2010, said Arch President John Eaves.
