Radiate Media, which uses "old media" outlets to connect small companies to various forms of new media, was named Utah's fastest-growing company on Tuesday.
The Salt Lake City technology firm topped the list of 100 companies with the largest percentage growth in revenue. The ranking is sponsored annually by the MountainWest Capital Network, a nonprofit group that aims to help Utah businesses prosper.
Radiate Media partners with local media mostly radio and television stations but also some newspapers to offer small businesses a one-stop technology platform that allows them to create their own websites and connect those sites through online services such as search engines and social media, as well as to advertise on traditional forms of media.
"It's a complete easy-to-use small-business promotional platform," said CEO Chris Rothey, who added that the company's annual compounded growth rate over the past five years was 11,122 percent.
Radio, television and newspapers have built relationships for years with small businesses, a tie that Radiate Media builds on, Rothey said, even as those so-called old media companies stumble in the face of advertising and readers gravitating online.
"We think old media has the potential to become the most powerful force in new media," he said. "A lot of people think old media is over and done, while actually we think the greatest asset old media has ... is they know businesses in their cities and they've known them for decades."
In addition to putting Radiate Media at the head of its Top 100 list, MountainWest Capital Network named its lists of Top 15 Revenue Growth Companies, based on the growth of total revenue, and Emerging Elite Companies, 15 young firms that show significant potential for growth.
Huntsman Corp., a Salt Lake City-based chemical manufacturer, was tops in gross revenue growth in the past five years. The Emerging Elite list was not ranked.
Jason Watson, director of business development for Wells Fargo Bank in Utah and president of the MountainWest Capital Network, said companies apply for the awards and provide financial information, which is kept private. The awards allow CEOs to share success with employees, he said.
"The CEOs will always come up [on stage] and say, 'This is not me, this is my people,' " Watson said. "So it provides an opportunity for them to share success from a state, nonprofit organization that promotes and recognizes that success."
Being named to the list also can help companies attract attention and capital, he said.
Last year, a company that helps businesses find and obtain loans, Lendio of South Jordan, was named the fastest-growing Utah company.
