Alta Ski Area has hired Montana-based Outside Media to help elevate its digital and public-relations presence as the resort enters its 75th season. A marketing company specializing in the outdoor industry, Outside Media has assigned an account manager to work with Alta's Connie Marshall on public relations and help build and implement a social media plan.

Credit union to

offer shred day

Security Service Federal Credit Union will host a shred day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at its service center, 5580 Van Winkle Expressway in Salt Lake City. The event is designed to help members, their friends and families dispose of unwanted personal documents. Participants are asked to limit their papers to what will fit inside 12 boxes measuring 18 inches by 20 inches.

Staples speeding

up store closings

Staples is accelerating the closure of about 15 of its U.S. stores, and plans to shutter 45 other locations and some delivery businesses in Europe. Staples intends to invest more in its online and mobile efforts, and will expand the product assortment it offers business customers. Traffic is down at Staples' stores as shoppers buy more online, and Europe continues to be a weak spot.

Toys R Us hiring

45,000 for holidays

Toys R Us is hiring 45,000 seasonal holiday workers to staff its temporary "pop up" stores and help fulfill its expanded customer services, such as shipping online purchases to stores. That is a nearly 13 percent jump from the number of workers it hired in 2011. Like many retailers, Toys R Us hires thousands of temporary workers during the important holiday season.

Tesla unveils solar

charging station

Tesla Motors took the wraps off a solar-powered charging station it said will make refueling electric vehicles about as fast as stopping for gas and a bathroom break in a conventional car. It said chargers have been installed at six rest stops in California. The stations can fully charge Tesla's Model S sedan in about an hour. A half-hour-charge will enable a driver to go 150 miles.

Barnes & Noble to

debut video services

Barnes & Noble will launch a video service this fall that lets users buy and watch movies and TV shows on their mobile devices and televisions. The bookseller says users of Nook Video will be able to shop for movies and shows from major studios. The new initiative represents the company's latest response to the growing competition from online retailers such as Amazon.com.

Spain's government was hit by the country's financial crisis on two fronts Tuesday. Protestors enraged with austerity cutbacks and tax hikes clashed with police near Parliament, while the nation's borrowing costs increased in an auction of its debt, signaling investors' uncertainty over the country's strategy for emerging from crisis.
