mine opposed

A proposed gypsum mine near St. George is drawing opposition from nearby residents who say it would bring noise, traffic and air pollution to an unspoiled area. Residents of a retirement community about five miles east of the site are spearheading the fight. Washington County commissioners have pushed back a decision on the project until after their scheduled Aug. 7 meeting, saying they want more time for study.

Slowing economy

hits McDonald's

McDonald's Corp., the world's biggest hamburger chain, said its net income fell 4 percent in the second quarter as a result of a strong dollar and struggling consumers in economically hard-hit regions of the world. For the quarter, McDonald's says it earned $1.35 billion, or $1.32 per share, down from $1.4 billion, or $1.35 per share, in the year-ago period. Revenue was $6.92 billion, up slightly from $6.91 billion.
