The Kimball Art Center in Park City said that BIG-Bjarke Ingles Group of New York and Copenhagen has been named the winning firm in the center’s architectural design competition for a planned renovation and expansion.

The $10 million project will entail an interior renovation of the existing art center and the construction of an adjacent building to house a new center.

The winning design by BIG-Bjarke proposed a new Kimball Art Center made of stacked timber elements reclaimed from train track piles from the Great Salt Lake. Its plan also included a spiral staircase, exhibition spaces, a restaurant and terrace.

For the existing Kimball Art Center building, BIG-Bjarke proposed that it be renovated into an educational hub with a rooftop sculpture garden.

BIG-Bjarke will partner with Architectural Nexus of Salt Lake City, which has a record of building in mountainous areas.

The project, which will happen in phases, is expected to begin in mid-2013 and be completed in mid-2015.
