(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield sustainability team and the the Salt Lake Valley Health Department sort through two days of employee trash at the Salt Lake transfer station on Wednesday, January 18, 2012. The goal is to improve the company's sustainability efforts. The company did a recent audit at its Portland, Ore. offices where they found that single-use to-go containers made up 25 percent of the waste. Compostable food scraps were 22 percent, cans and bottles made up 20 percent. The aim is to improve recycling practices at each site. In the mountain state region, Regence has offices in Oregon, selected counties in Washington, Utah and Idaho, serving 2.5 million members with health, life and dental insurance.
