Salt Lake-based Smith's Food & Drug Stores has contributed $1 million in the past year to schools in the chain's multistate operating area through its Earn & Learn program.

To participate, shoppers may link their rewards cards to the K-12 school of their choice by logging on to their Smith's accounts at www.smithsfoodanddrug.com or presenting a letter from the school with an Earn & Learn barcode to a store checker.

Enrollment must occur at the beginning of each school year and be completed no later than Sept. 30. Administrators can enroll their schools in Earn & Learn by completing an online application.

Each time a rewards card is used for a purchase at Smith's, the school earns money.

Smith's is a division of Kroger Co., one of the nation's largest retail grocers. From its Utah division office, Smith's manages 132 stores in seven western states.
