Some Whey-26 Protein Powder products sold in health food stores and on the Internet are being recalled because of possible salmonella contamination, according to the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food.
"This particular product is not generally sold in grocery stores," said Regulatory Services Division Director Richard Clark. "Instead, it is often carried at health food stores, clinics and fitness centers. The department is making contact with locations where the whey would be sold, and asking retailers to remove the products. However, we want to let the general public know about this in case some of these products have already been purchased and taken home."
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Georgia-based Vitalabs Inc. is voluntarily recalling four specific lot numbers of Whey-26 Protein Powder that could be contaminated:
• Vanilla Whey Isolate: Lot Number 3473
• Vanilla Whey Isolate: Lot Number 0131
• Chocolate Whey Isolate: Lot Number 3477
• Strawberry Whey Isolate: Lot Number 3364
