Newly remodeled EnergySolutions Arena a treat for fans

Ice cream was not far from managers' minds when remodeling began on Energy-Solutions Arena early last summer.

And on Friday, during a tour of the just-completed $4 million project, it was clear that ice cream lovers will not be disappointed.

With the new additions of commercial space, fans now may choose from pubs offering a variety of meals and beverages, exclusive dining areas overlooking the arena and even a play area for children needing a break after the intensity of a Jazz fourth-quarter run.

But with all the amenities, there's even more frozen treat offerings that Jazz fans have long been known to crave.

Sure, fans can still pick up a hot dog and a beer, but no other NBA franchise sells more ice cream than does EnergySolutions Arena.

Since the arena opened in 1991, the number of ice cream stands tripled to six, "and there still are long lines," said Randy Rigby, president and chief operating officer of Larry H. Miller Sports & Entertainment.

Now, on Level 5 is the spacious Farr's Ice Cream Parlor, where fans can sprinkle dozens of toppings on what the frozen treat company calls a triple threat of ice cream, yogurt and custard.

Also on Level 5 is the new KJZZ broadcast set, where fans may watch live pregame, halftime and postgame shows. Down the way is the Eureka Gold Club, which serves a pub-style menu with a spectacular view of the city. Early bird specials at all Jazz games at this and other pubs offer half price on food menu items from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Other pubs include Squatters-Wasatch Tavern and Bud Light Pub on the main concourse. On the same level is the Coors Light Legends Club, which offers a buffet and open bar at all Jazz games and other events.

Fans and concertgoers will see the remodeling immediately as they enter the main entrance. Four ticket windows have been installed for advance and walk-up sales. The original ticket lobby remains one level down for will-call and other services.

All entrances have extended glass doors, creating a buffer between the outside weather and main concourse. Walk-through magnetometers have been installed for added security.

The Jazz locker room also was expanded, giving players 50 percent more space and making the area more closely resemble the one at the Zions Bank Basketball Center practice facility. Among the amenities are a video screen, more space for trainers and support personnel, and electrical outlets so players may recharge their iPods and cell phones. (Note to fans: Locker rooms for visiting teams have not been touched.)

The Fanzz sports retail apparel stores have opened up a new 4,000-square-foot flagship location, with two smaller stores on the main concourse. The store is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Jazz game days from 9 a.m. until the end of the game.

Project includes pubs, kids play area, Fanzz stores — and more ice cream.
