The latest "Harry Potter" movie packed them into theaters nationally for midnight showings Thursday night, and three Salt Lake Valley theaters led the way.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1" scored $24 million at the box office, breaking the record for the franchise set by the previous installment, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," Warner Bros. announced Friday.

The top three theaters in North America were in the Utah-based Megaplex Theatres chain, a Warner Bros. spokesman said. The Megaplex 17 at Jordan Commons in Sandy came in first, the Megaplex 20 at The District in South Jordan was second, and the Megaplex 12 at The Gateway in downtown Salt Lake City ranked third.
