A motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon after careensing off Interstate 80 in Parley's Canyon.

The man — who was not immediately identified — was traveling east on a green Kawasaki sports bike at a high rate of speed, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. About 1:15 p.m., he tried to pass another vehicle near the exit for East Canyon, but there was not enough room, according to UHP.

The man lost control of the sports bike, went off the highway and crashed in a large dirt gore area. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered "major head trauma," UHP reported.

Troopers were waiting to release the man's name until they can notify his family.
