Investigators believe a boy playing with a lighter started a fire Tuesday afternoon that burned down his Cottonwood Heights home.
Unified Fire crews responded to an emergency call about 1:20 p.m. that a house at 7425 S. Butler Hills Drive (2215 East) had caught fire. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the house engulfed in flames.
"Our guys were able to make a quick, aggressive fire attack, but the fire had already advanced by the time we got there to the point where it appears the house is basically a complete loss," said Unified Fire Authority Battalion Chief Brian Anderton.
The boy and his grandfather escaped the house safely as it burned to the ground. The Red Cross was on the scene Tuesday afternoon helping them find somewhere to stay temporarily, Anderton said.
"[Their house] won't be habitable for quite a while," he added.
Police are not conducting a criminal investigation because the fire was caused accidentally, Anderton said.
