Ms. Lauryn Hill, the former member of The Fugees who received five Grammys for her only solo studio album, opens the Twilight Concert series tonight at Pioneer Park in Salt Lake City.
It's been 16 years since the release of "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," a landmark album, mixing R&B and hip-hop in a way that was fiercely feminist and commercially approachable. It sold an estimated 8 million copies in the United States and spawned the hit singles "Doo Wop (That Thing)," "Ex-Factor" and "Everything Is Everything."
Hill released a live album of new material in 2002, but it wasn't as well-received. That was followed by statements expressing disillusionment with the music industry. After that, a long silence, punctuated by a three-month prison sentence in 2013 for avoiding her income taxes.
Funk, jazz bassist Thundercat, who contributed to albums with experimental musician and producer, Flying Lotus, and thrash metal band, Suicidal Tendencies, will open the show at 7 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. and tickets are $5 at the entrance.
There will be one main entrance to the venue on 400 South and 400 West and six exits. No pets and no smoking is allowed. Officials will not allow refunds or re-entry.
The following items will not be allowed in the venue: skateboards, coolers, outside food and drink, large bags and bookbags, glass, large umbrellas and professional audio and visual recording technology.
