A large South Salt Lake apartment complex was evacuated for hours Saturday, until police could take a barricaded man into custody.

The man's mother called police about 11:45 a.m. after he made threats involving a knife to his girlfriend, said South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller. The man, 23, had been taken for a mental health evaluation about a month ago after making similar threats, Keller said.

Officers went to his apartment at the Wedgewood Willows apartment complex, at 3514 S. 300 East and called the man, who stayed on the phone with them for much of the day.

After several failed attempts to negotiate a surrender, a SWAT team set off an explosive to blow open the man's door and went inside, where he was taken into custody. No one, including the suspect, appeared to be hurt, Keller said.

During the stand-off, police evacuated the entire apartment complex — more than 50 units, Keller estimated.

"A large number of people have been displaced," Keller said.
