A woman is accused of hitting and trying to smother her 1-year-old son Monday in Riverdale.

In charges filed in 2nd District Court in Ogden Tuesday, police wrote that the woman, 25, was seen hitting her son several times with her hand and then a shoe. Witnesses said the woman then threw her son onto a bed, covered his face with a pair of pants to suffocate him and said she hoped he would die, police wrote.

The woman confessed to hitting her son and covering his face so he could not breathe, police wrote. She said that "in the moment, she wished he was dead," police wrote. She said she stopped because family members were yelling at her to stop, police wrote.

She was charged with child abuse involving recklessly inflicting serious physical injury, a third-degree felony, and child abuse involving physical injury, a class A misdemeanor. She made her first court appearance on Wednesday.
