Prep softball: Murray downs Riverton in nine innings
Riverton • The Murray softball team seized some momentum heading into the state playoffs by clawing its way past Riverton on Thursday.
The Spartans overcame a strong outing by Riverton starting pitcher Cortney Platt to post a 6-4 victory in nine innings against the second-place team from Region 3.
The Spartans outhit Riverton 17-9 and committed half as many errors as the Silverwovles, yet they needed a two-run homer by Maddie Fitsch in the sixth inning to pull even.
"It really shows our heart and drive,"Murray senior Lauren Bell said. "We're really excited that we got this win going right into the state playoffs because it really shows what we're capable of."
Platt allowed one run in the first inning, but she looked unstoppable entering the sixth.
Riverton enjoyed a 3-1 lead, but Murray leadoff hitter Christal Milne smacked a double to left field. Fitsch followed that by belting one over the center-field fence to even the score at 3-3 and put the momentum in the Spartans' dugout.
Both teams scored a run in the eighth before Murray ended it in the ninth.
Bell hit a grounder up the middle to Platt, who committed one of her few miscues of the day when her throw sailed over the first baseman's head. That allowed a run to score, and Bell scored on a hit by Emily Adams to make the final score.
"I just knew that, at this pace, we really just have to take advantage of other people's errors," Bell said. "They're not going to give it to us. Riverton's a really good team, and they're not just going to hand us the game, so you just have to take charge and do what you know how to do."
Both teams will host games in the playoffs. Murray, the No. 2 seed out of Region 7, will face East.
Riverton, the No. 2 seed from Region 4, will host Brighton. The Silverwolves defeated the Bengals in their first game of the season.
