Soccer: Alvaro Saborio tops Real Salt Lake in salary

Alvaro Saborio is Real Salt Lake's highest-paid player, overtaking midfielder Javier Morales for the distinction, according to Major League Soccer Players Union numbers released Monday.

Saborio, the league's third-leading scorer a season ago, is set to make a base of $360,000 this year — up slightly from $350,000 last season, according to the data. Morales, meanwhile, saw his guaranteed salary drop from $425,000 to $300,000 after contract negotiations with RSL over the offseason. The team still lists Morales as a designated player, however, which means he likely has the potential to earn above the threshold through performance bonuses, which the union does not include in its figures.

RSL newcomers Olmes Garcia and Joao Plata are set to make a base of $120,000 and $60,000 respectively, according to the union. Forward Robbie Findley's deal with the team is for a base of $175,000 annually.

Salt Lake's lowest paid players make the league minimum $35,125.

The New York Red Bulls have two of the league's highest-paid players in Thierry Henry ($3.75 million) and Tim Cahill ($3.5 million). The Los Angeles Galaxy's Robbie Keane ($4 million) and Landon Donovan ($2.5 million), and Seattle's Obafemi Martins ($1.6 million) round out the league's top five highest base salaries.
