A South Salt Lake man who was critically injured last week when he was struck by a car driven by an allegedly drunken motorist died early Wednesday, police said.

Mitchell L. Bennett, 50, suffered severe injuries to his spine, neck and head when he was hit about 11 p.m. Sept. 25 and thrown off his bike, South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said.

Bennett was riding north on 900 West at 3160 South when Peter Vance Wilcox hit the rear of the bike with his 2001 Saturn, then swerved out of his lane, Keller said.

According to a probable cause statement, Wilcox, of Salt Lake City, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.228, almost three times the legal limit of 0.08.

The 36-year-old was booked into a Salt Lake County jail on a felony charge of DUI causing serious injury and a misdemeanor charge of failure to operate within one lane.

Keller said Wednesday that he expects the case to be screened for enhanced charges.
