Sports briefs: Eastern Michigan football players charged with assault
COLLEGE FOOTBALL • Three Eastern Michigan University football players have been charged with assaulting the cousin of a man convicted of killing teammate Demarius Reed.
The Ann Arbor News says court records show that Darius Scott, Quincy Jones and Jairockeis Jones are charged with aggravated assault. The charges involve last Friday’s attack on 24-year-old Demarko Taylor.
The players have a pretrial hearing Monday. Eastern Michigan assistant athletic director Greg Steiner says they remain on the team during disciplinary proceedings.
Taylor was a prosecution witness at a probable cause hearing for Kristopher Pratt and Ed Thomas in the Oct. 18, 2013, robbery-slaying of Reed at an off-campus apartment in Ypsilanti. Reed was a 20-year-old Chicago native.
Taylor is Pratt’s cousin. Pratt pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
A jury acquitted Thomas.
D.C. United’s Rolfe has broken forearm
SOCCER • D.C. United midfielder Chris Rolfe has a broken left forearm and is expected to be sidelined for six weeks.
The club announced Thursday that Rolfe was injured during Wednesday’s practice. He had surgery Wednesday night.
Rolfe was acquired from the Chicago Fire on April 2. He has since appeared in 21 games, including 20 starts, and has six goals and has six assists for United. If Rolfe is back in six weeks, he would return around the start of the MLS playoffs.
Thunder’s Durant signs sponsorship deal
NBA • Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant said Thursday that he has signed a partnership deal with Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt.
Durant will own an undisclosed percentage of the company, his first such partnership since he joined the Roc Nation agency founded by Jay-Z last year. Orange Leaf, based in Oklahoma City, has 321 stores in 40 states, four in Australia and 69 under construction.
Champion boxer stabbed, stable
BOXING • Welterweight world champion boxer Kell Brook was stabbed in the leg while on vacation in Tenerife near Madrid and was in hospital, Spanish police said on Thursday.
Brook’s promoters said he was in a stable condition. Police confirmed the boxer was admitted to La Candelaria Hospital in the northeastern city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The 28-year-old British boxer won the IBF welterweight belt against American rival Shawn Porter on Aug. 16 in California.Brook was stabbed in his left leg on Wednesday while at the Golf del Sur resort complex in the southern town of San Miguel de Abona on the island in the Atlantic Ocean.
Police said they were investigating the incident, and no arrests have been made
