Kaysville • Home field advantage is sometimes called the friendly confines, but one particular spot of the field was a sore spot for the host Davis Darts on Friday night.

Hosting defending Class 5A state champ Bingham, the Davis offense spent a great deal of time in the second and third quarters between the north goal and the 20-yard line. That wouldn't be so bad, except that the Darts needed to move the ball 80 yards to the south goal line.

By the time Davis finally did move the ball away from its own end zone, the home team had fallen behind by a 24-0 count. The Miners went on to win the season opener 33-14, with both of the Darts' touchdowns coming late in the game.

"We feel like we've got one of the best defenses in the state," Bingham coach Dave Peck said. "I think its the best defensive backfield since I've been a coach in 30 years."

Constant rain fell in the first half and Bingham's first opportunity to score came shortly after recovering a Davis fumble late in the opening quarter. Quarterback Kyle Gearig took advantage with a 5-yard run for a 7-0 lead to close the opening period.

When the game still looked like it might be a slugfest, the Miners got a big boost from kicker Chayden Johnston, as the Bingham senior pounded home a 41-yard field goal through the rain. The visitors took a 10-0 lead with 3:20 before half.

Bingham (1-0) pulled away in the third as Davis' offense was hounded in its own end of the field. A three-and-out led to a short field and a touchdown by Cameron Smith two minutes into the second half.

Three minutes later, Smith slipped behind the Darts' secondary and caught a 45-yard pass from Gearig for the 24-0 lead.

"Bingham did a great job of pinning us. We were back in a hole," Davis coach Tyler Gladwell said. "We had the turnovers, a couple of penalties. You can't do that against Bingham and expect to be in the game." —
