Ogden • Steve Smiley has been named an assistant at Weber State, head coach Randy Rahe announced Thursday.

Smiley has been the head coach and athletic director at Sheridan (Wyo.) College, for the last six years. He replaces Phil Beckner, who left after seven years with the Wildcats to become an assistant coach with the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Developmental League.

Smiley posted a record of 153-43 at Sheridan. He was a two-time North Region coach of the year. In all, 38 of his players moved on to play basketball at a four-year school.

"Weber State has been a winning program forever and this is a place where they do it the right way," Smiley said. "It's also a great place to raise a family. I'm honored for the opportunity."

Said Rahe: "We couldn't be more excited to have Steve join our program. We are fortunate to have him here. We believe he is a perfect fit for how we do things at Weber State. He is a high character person with great values and is definitely someone who will fit in the culture we've developed here."

A Denver native, Smiley was a three-year starter at Northern (S.D.) State. He graduated in 2004.
