Relatives of a 23-year-old man who was instantly killed after stepping in front of a semi-trailer rig exiting Interstate 15 late Wednesday near Clearfield have told investigators he was suicidal, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

In addition, the relatives said the man, who lived in the area, was suffering from a severe mental illness, the UHP said in a news release.

UHP said the man was walking on the ramp heading north to 700 South when the big rig struck him about 10 p.m. Wednesday. Initial reports indicated the man intentionally stepped into the path of the semi.

Troopers found the man dead at the scene. The driver of the semi was not injured.
