A group of Boy Scouts made it safely out of the rugged hills east of Smithfield just hours after triggering a major search and rescue effort.
Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Doyle Peck confirmed Wednesday that search and rescue crews, along with a helicopter, were dispatched to the Flat Top area late Tuesday afternoon after receiving a 911 call at 4 p.m.
Dispatchers were told that a 13-year-old scout had fallen onto a ledge and was trapped and hurt, about 3 miles east of Smithfield.
"Initial reports indicated that the young boy was unable to feel his legs and unable to move. His scout leader was with him but was unable to move the boy alone," Peck said.
In addition to Cache County Search and Rescue personnel, Smithfield firefighters and a Life Flight helicopter responded to assist.
About 5:30 p.m., rescuers reached the boy, only to find that he had been able to get up and was walking unassisted. The youth and the rest of the troop subsequently were able to safely leave the effort and return to the valley floor.
