Police have arrested a 46-year-old woman they say was involved in a series of scams in Weber County, but her male accomplice remains at large.
The two are suspected of operating an illegal roofing company, bilking homeowners of money for nonexistent or unfinished re-roofing work, according to a release from the Weber County Sheriff's Office.
In five reported cases, the man quoted a low price for the job before requesting money in advance to cover the cost of materials, the sheriff's office said.
Sometimes, the man took the money and never returned. In other cases, the man and his crew actually started the work but asked for more money to complete the job. When the homeowner refused to pay, the man disappeared, leaving the roof torn up and unfinished, the sheriff's office said.
Police are seeking the public's help in apprehending the man, who they say drives either a white 2001 GMC Yukon (Utah license plate D784GX) or a blue and silver 1985 Chevy pickup (Idaho license plate 2M66721).
The Weber County Sheriff's Office has urged anyone who knows of the man's whereabouts to call 801-778-6631.
The sheriff's office has also advised the public to avoid being scammed by illegal contractors by remaining wary of job quotes that seem too good to be true.
"Although it may be tempting to try and save a few bucks, it is advised to stay away from these fly-by-night companies, many of which are simply fronts to rip off hard-working, honest people," the sheriff's office said.
