A hiker who was stranded overnight on a cliff in Provo Canyon has been rescued, the Utah County Sheriff's Office says.

The hiker called about 11 p.m. Thursday saying he was stranded about 2,000 feet above Squaw Peak Road, Sgt. Spencer Cannon said. He said the hiker is not injured but is hungry and thirsty after running out of food and water.

Members of a rescue crew began climbing up to the hiker early Friday. The helicopter was used after the crew assessed the situation.
