An Ogden woman died after a driver ran into her while she and her granddaughter were crossing the street.
The 48-year-old woman was not immediately identified in a Sunday news release.
She and her 8-year-old granddaughter were on their way home from a store Saturday night and walking east across Harrisville Road, at 164 North, when the accident occurred, according to the release. Witnesses told investigators that "it appeared as if the woman and the girl were stopped in the roadway attempting to retrieve a sandal that had fallen of one of their feet," the statement reads.
About 9 p.m., a northbound midsize sport utility vehicle hit the grandmother, according to the police. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The girl was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The 68-year-old driver told investigators he did not see the woman or the girl in the road, the release said. Police are still investigating the crash and have not issued any citations.
