Hundreds laid off at Utah health care call center

Sandy • General Dynamics is laying off at least 645 people at a call center devoted to federal health care reform in the Salt Lake City suburb of Sandy.

The information technology unit of General Dynamics runs the call center to help consumers trying to buy insurance on the online federal health care marketplace.

The company said last summer it was recruiting about 1,600 people at facilities in Sandy and Layton under a federal contract administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

It's unclear if they ever filled all of those openings.

CMS spokesman Richard Olague said Friday that the call center will staff up and down throughout the year to meet demand.

He says about 450 employees will continue to work at the Sandy center and about 250 at the Layton center.
