NFL • The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks will kick off the regular season Thursday, Sept. 4, hosting Green Bay, the first of four opening-weekend prime-time games. Sunday features a matchup of AFC champ Denver and Peyton Manning hosting his former team, Indianapolis; and a Monday doubleheader with the New York Giants at Detroit, followed by San Diego at Arizona. For those looking for a rematch of Seattle's 43-8 rout of Denver in the Super Bowl, it's Sept. 21 at Seattle. For the first time, games in Weeks 5 through 10 can be flexed from Sunday afternoon to night. Starting in Week 11, a Sunday game can be moved to prime time each week. Also, some "cross-flexed" Sunday games can move between CBS and Fox to potentially draw more viewers.
Phelps hits the pool
SWIMMING • 22-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps says he is making a comeback after nearly two years out of the pool because he missed the sport that has been his entire life. Phelps has shed the 30 pounds he put on since retiring after the 2012 London Olympics and will resume his career starting Thursday in Mesa, Ariz. He will swim the 100-meter butterfly, an event in which he holds the world record.
Nadal labors to win
TENNIS • Second-seeded David Ferrer was ousted from the Barcelona Open by Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili, 6-4, 6-2, and Rafael Nadal labored to victory Wednesday past fellow Spanish player Albert Ramos 7-6 (2), 6-4.
• Alisa Kleybanova, ranked No. 103, beat third-seeded Petra Kvitova 6-2, 7-6 (3) on Wednesday to provide the first major upset at the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany.
