Murray • The Mountain View Bruins boys' soccer team traveled to Murray on Friday night to take on the Spartans in a game under the lights.

The game was back and forth in the first half with few solid shots on goal and the Bruins were dominating the time of possession. Then with just seconds left in the half, Murray flipped the script on its way to a 2-0 victory.

"We felt like we weren't being prepared to move the ball when we got it. Our guys were holding the ball a little too long and letting them rotate in," said Murray coach Bryan DeMann.

The solution was simple: DeMann asked everyone to stick to their role and attack.

"Instead of holding it, we were making a touch or two and then knowing where we were going with the ball," said DeMann. "That got them chasing [us] instead of them being able to possess. When you get them moving, then they're out of position. It makes it easier for us to pass the ball too."

In the closing minute, Murray had two solid shots on goal. One was saved and the other went in just before the clock hit zero, as Sean Speirs struck the net on an assist by Sam Hansgen. That would be one of two goals for Speirs — the other was assisted by Chris Oregon — and those wound up being the all Murray needed.

The difference in the game was team speed and quick decisions. Once Murray made that adjustment, it was smooth sailing.

"I noticed that their backs were really slow and our front line is super fast, so if we kept it in the midfield and then swung it out wide, we could beat them every time," said Speirs. "It just made space and gave us opportunities."

With the Spartans clicking as a unit, all seemed right again for coach DeMann and his boys as they snapped a two-game skid.

"We showed some character tonight in getting back at it, sticking with each other, and having all the confidence in each other. I'm proud of them," said DeMann. —
