A two-car crash snarled traffic Friday afternoon in West Valley City and sent two people to the hospital.
The crash happened at 1:16 p.m. when a northbound Honda car jumped the center median on Bangerter Highway near 4100 South, according West Valley City police Sgt. Chad Evans. The Honda then collided head on with a southbound SUV.
The driver of the Honda, a man in his 20s, was in critical condition following the accident. The SUV driver, a woman, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police have not yet identified the drivers.
Evans said the accident may have resulted from distracted driving, with witnesses saying they saw the driver of the Honda texting or making phone calls.
Two other vehicles also suffered damage from debris, but their drivers walked away uninjured.
Police closed Bangerter Highway until about 6 p.m. while they investigated the accident. Evans explained that officers had to diagram several hundred yards of the road for their investigation, which forced them to divert traffic to side streets.
