The Ladies Literary Club's Blue Tea on Saturday, April 26, is a chance for the public to tour the landmark clubhouse at 850 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City.
Docent-guided tours will run continuously from 1 to 3 p.m. Guests can enjoy tea and other refreshment while listening to The Utah National Guard 23rd Army Band Jazz Combo. A $10 donation is suggested. Valet parking will be available.
"The annual event was once one of the social highlights of the club and the city," said Kirk Huffaker, executive director of the Utah Heritage Foundation, which is hosting the event.
The Blue Tea was originated in the 1870s by Jennie Anderson Froiseth, who missed some of the intellectual excitement she had enjoyed at her former home in England, according to club history. The name Blue Tea came from the blue stockings the original members wore, and this tradition continues today.
Huffaker said Utah Heritage Foundation is renovating the building to preserve its character. It is available for performances, weddings, meetings and other public and private functions. Proceeds from Saturday's tea will help fund renovation.
The Ladies' Literary Club was founded in 1877 to promote literary and artistic endeavors, and its members played an important role in the development of public libraries in Utah. The building, designed by prominent Utah architects Walter E. Ware and Alberto O. Treganza, opened April 25, 1913.
