A large, decorative wrought-iron gate has been stolen from the University of Utah.
A groundskeeper noticed on March 18 that half of the gate had been removed from its pillar in front of President's Circle, on the west end of campus.
"It must have been heavy," said University police Sgt. Mike Richards. "I don't know why you would take a gate."
The gate was ornately scrolled and stood about 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, Richards estimated. The two halves of the gate were typically kept open, against their respective pillars.
Grounds supervisors have estimated the stolen gate's value to be $800 to $900.
Investigators believe that it was stolen as a prank or for scrap metal, Richards said.
Campus police handle about 600 theft reports each year, Richards said.
