Twelve people escaped injury in an early morning house fire in rural Utah County on Sunday.
Utah County Fire Marshal Jack Snow said all 12 residents of the Palmyra house near 5000 S. 1200 West exited safely after smoke alarms woke them.
Snow said the fire started just before 6:30 a.m. While an investigation is ongoing, Snow said the fire's cause was likely accidental.
"We initially suspected that the fire first started on the outside of the house, possibly sparked by a nearby trash fire," Snow said.
Fire investigators had not yet entered the house as of 9 a.m. Sunday, Snow said.
Several rooms in the 4,500-square-foot home were completely engulfed in fire, and the entire home sustained heavy smoke damage, according to Snow, who estimated the damage at more than $100,000.
