For all the talk about how Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, creators and executive producers of "How I Met Your Mother," had the end of the series mapped out since the beginning, they did have a contingency plan in Season 1. If the show had been canceled after 13 episodes, they had a way out.

"It would have been Victoria, probably," Thomas said.

Victoria (Ashley Williams) was Ted's (Josh Radnor) first serious girlfriend on "How I Met Your Mother." She moved to Germany and the long-distance relationship failed.

Years later in Season 7, Victoria left her fiancé at the altar and ran off with Ted. The two were briefly engaged in Season 8, and Victoria returned in an episode that aired in February.

"I don't know if we ever consciously said this out loud," Bays said. "I would imagine we both kind of agreed."

They never told anyone else what they were thinking, either.

"Ashley Williams is reading this, like, '[Expletive]! That would have been awesome!' " Thomas said.
