A Clearfield man was behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of attempting to carjack a Layton woman after initially forcing his way into her vehicle and choking her.

Layton police said the incident took place Tuesday morning near the intersection of Oak Hills Drive and Highway 89, where the 18-year-old victim was waiting to make a left turn. The suspect suddenly opened her passenger-side door, jumped inside and grabbed her by the neck, cutting off her air, and then released his grip to demand she drive him away from the scene.

Instead, the woman escaped the car and fled on foot while the suspect initially attempted to steal the vehicle. However, the victim told police, he apparently was unfamiliar with the vehicle's manual transmission and couldn't drive away.

Instead, the suspect exited the car and began to chase the woman. Another motorist saw what was happening and gave the victim a rideto a nearby convenience store where police were called.

Davis County sheriff's deputies soon spotted the suspect, confronted him and, after a brief struggle, took him down, handcuffed and arrested him.

The man, who has a past criminal history of drug abuse, was booked on suspicion of second-degree felony robbery, third-degree felony aggravated assault and resisting arrest, a class B misdemeanor. He was being held in lieu of $15,000 bail.

The woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released, police said.
