Highland • Nothing but a big finish would do for Lone Peak's TJ Haws.

If he was going to break the school's single-game scoring record and surpass the great offensive players of the past, he had to do it in style.

So with 6:30 left in the game, Haws came up with a steal and raced down court for a dunk that gave him the record with 40 points on the night and helped Lone Peak to a 90-63 win over Westlake on Friday night in the Region 4 opener.

"He had 40 and played one minute of the fourth quarter. As impressive as that was, he also had nine assists," said Lone Peak coach Quincy Lewis. "That's a great accomplishment, especially to do it in basically three quarters of a game."

Haws broke Nick Emery's scoring record of 39 points that was set in the 2011-12 season. His older brother Tyler, who once scored 38 points, was in the stands to watch him connect on 14 of 18 shots from the field and can seven 3-pointers.

Following his dunk, Lewis called a timeout to pull Haws with 6:30 remaining in a game that was well out of reach.

"It's amazing to be up there with some of the guys who have come through this program because they are some of the best players to ever come through the state," Haws said. "I thought about it [the record] just a little bit at the end. I knew the dunk did it and I thought it was a pretty cool way to get it."

Lone Peak opened the game with 3-pointers from Frank Jackson, Haws and Zach Frampton to take a quick 9-3 lead. Haws hit a jumper and another 3-pointer and just like that the Knights had a 16-5 lead, less than five minutes in to the game. By the end of the first quarter Lone Peak's lead had ballooned to 27-9 and Haws had 13 points.

The lopsided loss spoiled Bryaden Holker's 25-point night for Westlake. —
