tennis • With the Davis Cup on the line, Radek Stepanek delivered again. Stepanek gave the Czech Republic its second straight Davis Cup title Sunday in Belgrade, Serbia, sweeping past Dusan Lajovic in straight sets in the fifth and decisive match to secure a 3-2 win over Serbia in the final.

The 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 win over 117th-ranked Lajovic made Stepanek the first player in the history of the tournament to decide consecutive finals in the fifth match. He defeated Spain's Nicolas Almagro last year.

Serbia's Novak Djokovic had tied the series 2-2 in the opening singles match Sunday by beating Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-2. He improved his career record against the Czech to 15-2.

Division III player scores 109 points

college basketball • Jack Taylor renewed his membership in the Century Club. Taylor scored 109 points for Division III Grinnell (Iowa) College on Sunday, shooting 24-for-48 on 3-pointers in a 173-123 win over Crossroads. He poured in 53 during the first nine minutes of the second half.

The 5-foot-10 guard from Black River Falls, Wis., set an NCAA record for any level by scoring 138 points last Nov. 20 in a 179-104 win over Faith Baptist Bible College.

The only other player to score more than 109 in an NCAA game was Rio Grande's Clarence "Bevo" Francis, who had 113 against Hillsdale in 1954.

Royals sign catcher Francisco Pena

MLB • The Kansas City Royals have signed catcher Francisco Pena and added him to the 40-man roster. The 24-year-old Pena, the son of former Royals manager Tony Pena, has spent the past six years in the New York Mets organization. He hit .257 last season for Triple-A Las Vegas with nine homers and 39 RBIs. He committed just three errors and threw out 30 percent of stolen-base attempts.

Pena was also a member of the champion Dominican Republic squad in this past year's World Baseball Classic, where he was 1 for 2 with an RBI in two tournament games.
