The U.S. Speedskating long-track team enjoyed another strong day at the opening World Cup event of the season on Sunday, with Tucker Fredricks and Heather Richardson racing to victories in Calgary, Alberta, and Brittany Bowe also reaching the podium.

Fredricks beat the reigning Olympic champion by 0.01 seconds to win the second of two men's 500-meter races contested over the weekend, after having to race the first one in the lower "B" division because the Americans did not have enough starting positions for him in the "A" race.

Fredricks clocked 34.46 seconds to beat Mo Tae-Bum of South Korea, with teammate Mitchell Whitmore fifth in 34.56 after finishing eighth in the first 500 on Friday.

Richardson and Bowe finished first and third in the women's 1,000 meters — their specialties — with Richardson clocking 1:13.23 and Bowe 1:13.70, giving the Americans seven medals, including a victory and national record in the men's team pursuit on Saturday.

Meanwhile, John-Henry Krueger captured silver Saturday in the men's 1,500 at a World Cup short-track event in Turin, Italy. It was the only medal for the Americans at the event, and Krueger was the only American to reach an individual final.

The long-track skaters make their next World Cup stop Friday through next Sunday at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns.
