NBA • Walt Bellamy, the Hall of Fame center who averaged 20.1 points and 13.7 rebounds in 14 seasons in the NBA, died Saturday. He was 74.
"Walt Bellamy was an enormously gifted Hall of Fame player who had a tremendous impact on our game," NBA Commissioner David Stern said. "Off the court, he was an even more extraordinary person. Walt is going to be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him."
The former Indiana University star won an Olympic gold medal in 1960 and was the first overall pick by the Chicago Packers in 1961. He was the rookie of the year with Chicago, averaging 31.6 points and 19.0 rebounds, and also played for the Baltimore Bullets, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta and New Orleans Jazz. He played in four All-Star games and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.
Ferrer stuns top-seeded Nadal
TENNIS • David Ferrer stunned top-seeded Rafael Nadal 6-3, 7-5, and Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the Paris Masters semifinals on Saturday. Ferrer had lost nine straight times to Nadal, including in this year's French Open final, and hadn't beaten his fellow Spaniard in almost three years. But the defending champion hit 29 winners to 19 for Nadal and won 14 of 18 net points. In the other semifinal, Djokovic faced Federer for the 30th time. Despite the loss, Federer still leads the rivalry, 16-14.
• Simona Halep and Samantha Stosur will meet in a WTA final for the second time in three weeks at the season-ending Tournament of Champions in Sofia, Bulgaria. Top-seeded Halep rallied from a set down to beat Ana Ivanovic 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, and fourth-seeded Stosur outlasted Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in the semifinals on Saturday.
