A driver has his seat belt to thank for only suffering minor injuries in a rollover near Parleys Canyon Sunday night.

He was traveling east on Interstate 80 about 7:45 p.m. when his Mazda 6 veered left, striking and jumping the concrete median, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lawrence Hopper. After sliding along the median for a stretch, the Mazda then rolled off the highway near mile post 126 and landed on its hood on 2000 East below, Hopper said.

But the driver had only minor injuries, which troopers credit to his seat belt. He was taken to a local hospital in an ambulance.

The Utah Department of Transportation shut down the left lanes of eastbound I-80 about 8 p.m. The closure backed up traffic to at least Sugar House Park for about an hour.
