There are about 35,000 federal employees in Utah, according to the lobbying and public policy firm Eye on Washington, which compiles its statistics from federal data.

Most are working for the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which Eye on Washington combines into one category. The plurality of federal employees work in Salt Lake County, but federal workers comprise a much bigger sector of the economy in rural counties.

The circles in the map represent what percentage of non-farm jobs federal workers comprise county-by-county. The biggest circle is in Emery County, where federal workers comprise 27 percent of non-farm jobs. (Eye on Washington did not have reliable data for Garfield County.) The non-farm job data came from the Utah Department of Workforce Services.
