Centerville • Fremont's Mariah Elmer made sure late arrivals regretted their tardiness.

She used some dazzling footwork to split three defenders then found the back of the net in the second minute Tuesday against Viewmont.

Fremont secured top spot in Region 1 with a 3-1 victory.

Elmer scored twice to put her teaming the driver's seat in the region.

"We knew it was going to be a hard match," junior Carlie Watson said. "We stuck to our plan and played our best."

Viewmont's lone goal came in the 18th minute from Ballee Hammond. She ripped a shot through the Fremont keeper's hands from about 45 yards out to send the teams to halftime locked at 1-1.

Elmer finished a corner kick with authority to regain the lead.

"I don't know how I was in position for that goal," Elmer said. "It fell through two girls, and I put it away.

It was her 11th goal this season.

Substitutions on both squads mimicked a hockey line change in a physical game.

"You know you have to be ready to go against Viewmont," Elmer said. "We knew we had to be real confident in this game."

Watson put the game out of reach in the 55th minute by following through on a deep shot from Melanie Graves. As Viewmont's keeper knocked down the shot, Watson pushed home the ball for the score.

Fremont's spacing was the difference. Moving up and back the field in unison supported attacks and stifled the Viking defense.

Watson credited the defense for a win-at-any-cost approach to the game as being the key component to the Silver Wolves' 11 victories in 13 tries this season.

"We have the greatest defenders in the game," Watson said. "They do whatever needs to be done to stop the ball." —
