Games of the Week

Highland at East • Separated by a smidge over two miles, the longtime rivals clash again Friday night at East. The two option-powered teams face off for bragging rights as well as a lead in the vaunted Region 6. Can Stanley Sitani wear down the Leopard defense? Can Isaac Valles, Ula Toluta'u and Preston Curtis wear down Bryan Mone and Pita Tonga? This is the game to see this week, a game loaded with Division I talent on both sides.

Jordan at Herriman • Something's gotta give for the Beetdiggers. Jordan, facing arguably the toughest three-game slate any team will face this season, has dropped three in a row. Defending 5A MVP Austin Kafentzis continues to rack up the yardage, and he'll have to again this week because the Mustangs ran for more than 400 yards in their win over Lone Peak last week. Kafentzis, who is coming off a 446-yard passing display against Bergen Catholic, will need to put up points. This one could be a back-and-forth, high-scoring affair.

Juan Diego at Bear River • The Soaring Eagle are coming off their highest scoring output in school history, a 69-0 romp over Ben Lomond. The Bears are coming off a 62-point output in which quarterback JarDee Nessen accounted for eight touchdowns in the win over Tooele. The 3AA North region meeting will catapult one team into first place. Expect more touchdowns. From everyone.

Players to Watch

Colby Averett, jr., South Summit, RB • For a team that's thrown for 268 yards in four games, South Summit sure is dominating its opponents early on. Much of that is due to the Wildcats' ground attack, spearheaded by Averett, who is averaging 99 yards per game and has eight touchdowns. A sure threat to Gunnison's rush defense in their Week 5 showdown.

Jacen Condie, sr., American Fork, QB • Before the Cavemen enter an important region stretch, they travel to Westlake on Friday. Condie will be paving the way for American Fork to continue what has been an impressive start. He has thrown for 1,033 yards and eight touchdowns and will test the Westlake secondary.

Big number

993

Lehi workhorse Caden Calton sits 7 yards away from the 1,000-yard mark heading into his fifth game of the season. Calton has 13 touchdowns and is averaging 248 yards per game. The test Friday night is Pleasant Grove, which is 4-0. Calton almost is guaranteed to eclipse 1,000 yards, but how much more will he add to his tally?

Darts closing in

The Davis football program sits one win away from tying West for all-time victories by a Utah high school team. The Darts own 554 victories and will go after the record-tying victory against Fremont on Friday night. Davis is 4-0 and has one of the largest margins of victory through those four wins. West has a bye this week, so the Panthers won't have a chance to keep the record.

Bengals have some serious bite

The Brighton defense has been dominant in its first four games of the season. The Bengals have allowed six points in the last three games and 8.5 points per game overall, along with a 31.5 win margin per outing. Led by Isaiah Kaufusi, Osa Masina and Sage Nelson, the Bengals hope to handcuff the Hunter offense on the road.

Paging Jim McMahon

If the Roy Royals can topple region rival Logan on Friday night on the road, it will mean the Royals are 5-0 for the first time since former BYU and NFL star quarterback Jim McMahon led the Royals to a 10-0 start in 1975. Thirty-eight years is a long time, and the Royals could be onto something special if they can beat the Grizzlies. —
