Games of the Week

Herriman at Lone Peak • The preseason has been a thorough test for the Mustangs, and they get another big one in Highland. Baron Gajkowski and Co. look to continue their impressive offensive outing after shredding Mullen (Colo.) last week.

Salem Hills at Timpview • The Thunderbirds answered the call and bounced back from a loss in fantastic fashion, toppling Alta 41-28 on the road last week. The T-Birds face a talented young quarterback in Porter Gustin, who has thrown for 928 yards and 11 TDs in three games.

Lehi at Westlake • The Pioneer offense is averaging 41 points per game in its 2-1 start. Running back Caden Calton has rushed for 678 yards and nine touchdowns in Lehi's preseason. How will former BYU quarterback Steve Clements, Westlake's first-year coach, handle that? Well, the Thunder are 3-0 themselves and have a chance to move to 4-0 at home.

Players to Watch

Ben Bergeson, sr., Highland, WR/DB • A key cog in the Rams defense, Bergeson already has intercepted four passes this season and is looking like one of the top cornerbacks in the state. He will have his eyes on Kearns quarterback Bailey Floyd this week as the Rams head to Kearns to take on the Cougars.

Chase Manning, sr., Olympus, QB • The Titans leader under center has guided them to a 2-0 start, with each of their wins coming over 5A opponents Northridge and West Jordan. Manning must direct the offense this week at Taylorsville, where the upstart Warriors have a staunch defensive line. Expect Manning to get Connor Haller involved early.

The Soaring Eagle

Juan Diego has won 10 consecutive region titles, according to Utah high school football expert George Felt. Only Manti (1949-1960) and Dixie (1966-1976) have held longer region title streaks. The Soaring Eagle start their 3AA North campaign at home against Ben Lomond.

Big number

87

The Spanish Fork Dons and Springville Red Devils tangle for the 87th time Friday night in Spanish Fork. While the Dons have pulled out the last two meetings, they've slimmed down Springville's series lead. The Red Devils hold a 42-41-3 advantage.

Still-climbing Kafentzis

After racking up 370 yards in the loss to East last week, Jordan quarterback Austin Kafentzis now sits alone in second place all-time in total yardage. The junior Wisconsin commit has 10,057 total yards in his career with the Beetdiggers. He trails former Mountain Crest great Alex Kuresa by 2,680 yards.

Hot as Hades

The Grand Red Devil offense has been ablaze in its first three games of the season. Grand has amassed 920 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground in its 3-0 start while averaging 48 points per game. Can South Sevier keep up with the Devils? The Rams are averaging 11 points a game. —
