Ski-movie season kicks off Wednesday.
That means ski season can't be far off, and that makes ski industry people happy, especially when ski movies tend to pique skiers and boarders' interest in buying passes and new gear.
"It's really an important tradition in the ski industry, particularly in communities that are so ski heavy as Salt Lake City, Ogden and Park City," said Susie English, spokeswoman for Ski Utah, marketing arm of the state's 14 resorts.
"It's the first thing that happens in the fall that gets people excited about the winter," she added. "The movies switch people's gears, from thinking about summer to winter, even though it's still pretty hot outside."
Year in and year out for the past half century, Warren Miller's ski movie is the biggest draw. This year's film, "Ticket to Ride," debuts Oct. 11-12 at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City. Ten screenings are scheduled through Oct. 19 at theaters in Orem, Ogden and Park City.
The honor of inaugurating the 2013 ski-movie season goes to Denver-based Level 1, whose film "Partly Cloudy" airs Wednesday at The Depot in Salt Lake City. "The Wallish Project" and "All Damn Day" also will be shown.
Powderwhore will be the featured production company Sept. 25-27 when "Elevation" airs at Brewvies in Salt Lake City, followed Sept. 28 with the debut of Teton Gravity Research's "Way of Life" at the Gallivan Center in Salt Lake City and at Jupiter Bowl in Park City.
"Valhalla," by Sweetgrass Productions, will be shown Oct. 9 at Jim Santy Auditorium in Park City and Oct. 10 at Level 9 Sports in Salt Lake City. On Oct. 11, Matchstick Productions also will unveil its new film, "McConkey." The final movie of the season, "Few Words" by Quiksilver, will air Nov. 29 in the University of Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium tower.
