A Salt Lake City man died after a head-on collision Monday night on Redwood Road.

The man, 40, was driving an SUV north on Redwood near 657 South, when he drifted into oncoming traffic and collided with a southbound tow truck.

The driver of the SUV suffered severe chest injuries, said Salt Lake City police Lt. Carl Merino. Medics tried to revive the man, but he died at the scene, Merino said. Police were not releasing his name pending family notifications. Investigators do not yet know why the man drifted over the center line, Merino said.

The driver and passenger in the tow truck were not injured.
